Sherman College Names 2024 Chiropractor of the Year, Regent of the Year and Other Award Recipients
Spartanburg, SC (06/20/2024) — Sherman College of Chiropractic honored alumni, chiropractors, and supporters during its 51st Lyceum event, a homecoming and continuing education event attended by hundreds throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held annually for three days, consisting of seminars, special events, and other programs. Over 800 individuals participated in this year's event, held May 3-5 on the Sherman campus in Spartanburg. The college is proud to announce the following 2024 award recipients who were recognized at Lyceum:

Thom and Betty Gelardi Service Award & the Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) Faculty Member of the Year Award: Bill Decken, D.C., L.C.P., D.Ph.CS
The Thom and Betty Gelardi Service Award was created to honor Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi, Sherman founder and member of the first graduating class, respectively, for their lifelong commitment to Sherman and the chiropractic profession. Recipients of this award mirror the Gelardi's unselfish dedication, visionary leadership, and pioneering spirit.
The Reach Out And Recruit ROAR Award is presented to the exceptional Sherman faculty member who has gone above and beyond to recruit students to Sherman College.
William (Bill) M. Decken, D.C., L.C.P., D.Ph.CS was honored by Sherman College of Chiropractic as the 2024 recipient of two prestigious awards - the Thom and Betty Gelardi Service Award and the Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) Faculty Member of the Year Award.
An esteemed and distinguished chiropractic professional, Dr. Decken is renowned globally for his numerous contributions to the profession. He is also highly respected for his efforts in student recruitment at Sherman College, where he fosters the growth and development of future chiropractors.
Dr. Decken graduated cum laude from Sherman College in 1986, receiving the prestigious Milton W. Garfunkel Award. His academic journey includes a bachelor's degree in environmental science from Marist College in 1979. Before starting his chiropractic career, Decken taught high school chemistry and conducted toxicology research at Texaco, Inc. His transition to academia occurred in 1987 when he joined the faculty at Sherman College, where he currently serves as professor of clinical sciences and chair of the philosophy department. Dr. Decken's expertise lies in teaching philosophy and subluxation theory, imparting invaluable knowledge to future chiropractors.
A steadfast presence in the chiropractic community worldwide, Dr. Decken has held significant leadership roles and dedicated eight years of service to the South Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners. His passion for chiropractic philosophy led to the development and coordination of Sherman College's Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) program, which he teaches globally. This program offers practitioners a deeper understanding of chiropractic philosophy and its practical application in daily practice.
Dr. Decken's commitment to advancing chiropractic education and practice is evident through his leadership roles, including President and Chairman of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO) and co-founder of the Palmetto State Chiropractic Association (PSCA).
With over 38 years of experience, Dr. Decken operates Family Straight Chiropractic alongside his wife, Grace. Outside of his professional endeavors, Decken finds joy in spending time with his family, cycling, and enjoying the outdoors. His multifaceted contributions to chiropractic education and practice underscore his dedication to advancing the profession and improving the lives of his patients.
Chiropractor of the Year Award: Judy Nutz Campanale. D.C., A.C.P.
The Chiropractor of the Year is awarded to the chiropractor who has, through their service, given extraordinary time and effort to advance Sherman College and the principled chiropractic profession.
Judy Nutz Campanale, D.C., A.C.P., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Chiropractor of the Year Award.
Owner and practitioner at Strauss Chiropractic Center in Levittown, PA, Dr. Campanale oversees one of the world's longest-standing, high-volume cash practices, now in its remarkable 57th year. In 2013, after two decades of dedicated service, Dr. Campanale assumed ownership from her mentor and friend, Dr. Joe Strauss, a chiropractic luminary with nearly 46 years of practice.
Dr. Campanale's influence in chiropractic extends across various platforms. She has contributed significantly to the profession through her editorial work on numerous "Blue Books" authored by Dr. Strauss and Dr. Claude Lessard, covering topics ranging from philosophy to practice building. Additionally, since 2016, she has penned the monthly ICPA Kids' Newsletter, "Your Amazing Body," aiming to educate children and adults alike about the wonders of the human body in accessible language.
An accomplished author, Dr. Campanale has contributed to several published works, including "33," "The Wisdom of 33," and "The Triune of Life: Reggie Gold's Philosophical Legacy," each reflecting her deep commitment to chiropractic principles and philosophy.
Dr. Campanale's leadership extends to the academic realm, where she has served on the Board of Trustees of Sherman College of Chiropractic since 2016, assuming the role of Chair from 2018 to 2022. She is also a trailblazer in the profession, having served as the first female president of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO), formerly the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations.
Dr. Campanale has earned numerous prestigious awards throughout her career, including Chiropractor of the Year by FSCO in 1999 and by Sherman College of Chiropractic in 2000, marking her as the first woman to receive both honors. In 2008, she achieved the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) degree, solidifying her commitment to advancing chiropractic philosophy and practice.
Regent of the Year: Amy Spoelstra, D.C.
The Regent of the Year is awarded to a member of the Sherman College Board of Regents for their outstanding and continuous advancement of Sherman College through participation on the Board of Regents. This group supports quality chiropractic education and Sherman College through speaking engagements, leadership roles, student referrals, and financial support.
Amy Spoelstra, D.C., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Regent of the Year Award.
Dr. Spoelstra and her husband, David, reside in northern Idaho with their daughter Meela, where they operate Spoelstra Family Chiropractic. Established in April 2008, following their relocation from South Carolina, the clinic is a testament to their dedication and expertise in chiropractic care.
Dr. Spoelstra commenced her professional journey at Sherman College of Chiropractic, graduating in 2008 with honors. Since then, she has been committed to enhancing patient care, particularly for individuals facing behavioral, learning, socialization, and developmental hurdles. The inception of the FOCUS program in 2011 exemplifies her innovative approach, which she now imparts to chiropractors, educators, and medical practitioners globally.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Dr. Spoelstra finds joy in exploring different cultures with her family, practicing yoga, relishing a well-brewed cup of coffee, and continually expanding her knowledge through study. Her specialization in pediatric chiropractic, coupled with her research contributions to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, underscores her significant impact within the field. Dr. Spoelstra's published research on the developmental effects of chiropractic treatment further solidifies her reputation as a leading figure in chiropractic care.
Community Champion Award: Bennie Harris, Ph.D.
The Community Champion Award recognizes the leadership of an individual, service provider, educator, or community-minded group demonstrating exemplary efforts in a project advancing Sherman College.
Bennie L. Harris, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Community Champion Award.
Dr. Harris became the fifth chancellor of the University of South Carolina Upstate on July 1, 2021. A native of the Mississippi Delta farming community of Deeson, Chancellor Harris is deeply committed to inspiring and developing young people to change the world through higher education.
With a background in industrial engineering and strategic marketing, Chancellor Harris holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University, a Master of Business Administration from Washington State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Prior to his appointment at USC Upstate, Chancellor Harris held significant leadership roles at various institutions, including Morehouse School of Medicine, where he served as Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
At USC Upstate, Chancellor Harris has implemented transformative initiatives to enhance student success and regional impact. Notably, he spearheaded the Reimagine Upstate Summit and launched the Spartanburg Promise Scholarship program, offering talented high school seniors the opportunity to earn their degrees debt-free.
Under Chancellor Harris' leadership, USC Upstate has undergone a rebranding campaign, inviting the community to "Reach Greater Heights" and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
Beyond his role at USC Upstate, Chancellor Harris is actively involved in civic organizations, serving on boards such as the Spartanburg Academic Movement and the United Way of the Piedmont.
Distinguished Service Award: Drs. Lisa Lanzara-Bazzani and Victor Bazzani
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a Sherman graduate who has distinguished himself or herself through service to the community, the profession, and/or Sherman College.
Lisa Lanzara-Bazzani, D.C. and Victor Bazzani, D.C., are the recipients of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Distinguished Service Award.
Dr. Victor Bazzani is a dedicated advocate for exercise. He found his path to chiropractic through a quest for optimal health while embracing an active lifestyle. Recognizing the pivotal role of a healthy spine in overall well-being, he realized that chiropractic aligned perfectly with his holistic approach to health. A 1993 Sherman graduate, Dr. Bazzani believes chiropractic isn't just about addressing emotional stress or managing inherited traits; it's about embracing natural, preventative healthcare. With a firm belief in the importance of maintaining spinal health, Dr. Bazzani saw chiropractic as the ultimate avenue to serve communities and promote wellness.
A 1992 Sherman graduate, Dr. Lanzara-Bazzani was deeply influenced by her parents, Dr. Ronald F. Lanzara, Sr., a chiropractor, and her mother, Natalia, in her career journey. Growing up in a family dedicated to chiropractic care, she witnessed the transformative impact it had on generations of families, fostering relief and enhanced well-being through the restoration of spinal integrity. With seven chiropractors within her family serving communities in New Hampshire, Dr. Lanzara-Bazzani extended her reach to Bazzani Chiropractic Manchester in July 2018, furthering her commitment to serving others and promoting optimal health.
Her dedication to the advancement of chiropractic care is evident through her involvement in various professional organizations. As a current member of the New Hampshire State Chiropractic Society, an organization with a rich history dating back to 1919, she has left an indelible mark. Dr. Lanzara-Bazzani made history as the society's first female president, a testament to her leadership and dedication to breaking barriers.
In addition, Dr. Lanzara-Bazzani has been a dedicated member of the Sherman College Board of Trustees, initially serving as board secretary before assuming the role of board chair.
Spirit of Sherman College Award: Courtney Moseley, D.C.
The Spirit of Sherman College Award is presented to a Sherman graduate who exemplifies the true spirit of Sherman College in their professional lives.
Courtney Moseley, D.C., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Spirit of Sherman College Award.
A proud 2010 graduate of Sherman College, Dr. Moseley is making waves in the chiropractic community as the co-owner and founder of Music City Health Center alongside her husband, Dr. Justin, located in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
With a passion for community impact, Dr. Moseley has been recognized with the Women Impacting the Community award in the Healthcare category, receiving three nominations and winning once for her outstanding contributions. Her dedication to excellence is evident through her office being voted Best In Sumner County and Best In Hendersonville, reflecting the high regard in which her practice is held by the community.
Dr. Moseley is an active member of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association, contributing her expertise to furthering the profession in the state. A proud Sherman graduate, she also serves as a Sherman Regent, fostering connections and opportunities within the Sherman College community.

Rising Star Award: Victoria Pait, D.C.

Victoria Pait, D.C., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Rising Star Award.
Dr. Pait embarked on her academic pursuit at North Greenville University, earning a bachelor's degree in biology with a pre-med concentration and a minor in psychology. However, her journey shifted significantly towards chiropractic, inspired by its holistic principles and unwavering faith in the body's innate healing abilities. Dr. Pait's strong belief that chiropractic was her calling emerged after graduating from Sherman in 2021, reaching its pinnacle and igniting a passion that continues to drive her career.
As the proprietor of Victory Mount Chiropractic in Greer, South Carolina, Dr. Pait is dedicated to empowering individuals to embrace their full potential by aligning with their innate design.
Beyond her formal education, Dr. Pait has dedicated countless hours to mastering the intricacies of the Gonstead Method, a testament to her unwavering dedication to excellence in chiropractic care.
Additionally, her training in the Webster Technique underscores her commitment to supporting expectant mothers in experiencing optimal pregnancy and childbirth outcomes.
Service to Sherman College Award: Scott Garber, D.C.

Scott Garner, D.C., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Service to Sherman College Award.
Dr. Scott Garber's journey in chiropractic began with academic excellence, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Parker Chiropractic College in 2001. His stellar achievements were recognized with prestigious awards, including the James W. Parker Philosophy Award and the Chiropractic Technique and Scholastic Achievement Award. He was twice honored as International Chiropractor of the Year and Chiropractor of the Year from Parker University in Dallas, Texas.
Active in the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO) and a supporter of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, Dr. Garber is committed to advancing chiropractic globally. His passion for community service is evident through his involvement in initiatives such as the Pittsfield Rotary and the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, demonstrating his dedication to positively impacting the community and beyond his office.
Dr. Garber serves as a worldwide advocate for chiropractic care, leading missions to countries including Sri Lanka, the Czech Republic, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, and Romania. His self-funded efforts have brought healing and hope to countless individuals worldwide. In addition, he has conducted a chiropractic seminar, the Berkshire Experience, since 2007, delivering valuable program content and hosting exceptional speakers to enlighten audiences globally. Dr. Garber has donated more than $200,000 to chiropractic organizations, schools, research, and chiropractic pediatrics.

Sherman College of Chiropractic presented the 2024 Service to the Profession Award to three distinguished chiropractors: Armand Rossi, D.C., F.I.C.P.A., F.I.C.A.; Stephanie Foisy Ryan, D.C., C.C.W.P.; and Brook Mills, D.C.
Dr. Armand Rossi is a seasoned chiropractor who graduated from Palmer College in Iowa in 1976. With 47 years of active practice, he has dedicated his career to maintaining a family-centered approach to chiropractic care.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rossi has been deeply involved in chiropractic education. He served as a faculty member at Life University, where he chaired the technique department. Additionally, he contributed to the development of future chiropractors as a member of the Board of Regents at Life Chiropractic College West from 2012 to 2015.
A respected instructor, Dr. Rossi has taught in the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association's certification program since 1993, sharing his expertise in pediatric chiropractic care with practitioners worldwide. In May 2016, he joined Sherman College of Chiropractic as the Dean of Clinical Sciences, furthering his commitment to shaping the next generation of chiropractors.
In 2023, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association honored Dr. Rossi with its first Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field. Despite his professional achievements, Dr. Rossi's greatest source of pride is his chiropractic lifestyle and his close proximity to his four children, eleven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. His commitment to family and chiropractic care exemplifies his lifelong dedication to his profession and his loved ones.
Dr. Stephanie Foisy Ryan and Dr. Brook Mills: Mother and daughter Stephanie Foisy Ryan, D.C., C.C.W.P., and Brook Mills, D.C., are passionate chiropractors who advocate the benefits of chiropractic care in their communities locally, as well as nationally, and globally.
Dr. Ryan is a distinguished chiropractor, earning her Bachelor of Science degree summa cum laude from Regent's College and graduating with the same honor from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, in 2000. Throughout her academic journey, Dr. Ryan achieved recognition on the President's List, received the Presidential Scholar award, and was inducted into the Chiropractic Honor Fraternity.
Following her graduation, Dr. Ryan founded Crossroads Chiropractic, which has since expanded to four locations across New Hampshire. She holds the distinction of being the first chiropractor in the state to earn the C.C.W.P. credentials from the International Chiropractic Association and is certified in the Webster Technique by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).
A sought-after speaker, Dr. Ryan has shared her expertise nationally for esteemed organizations such as Parker Seminars, the International Chiropractic Association, the Texas Chiropractic Association, and the ICPA, among others. Committed to serving underserved communities, she has participated in six chiropractic mission trips to Bolivia, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Ft. Peck Indian Reservation.
In recognition of her leadership and expertise, Dr. Ryan was appointed by the Governor to serve on the New Hampshire Board of Chiropractic Examiners in October 2020. Additionally, she has hosted the "Half Hour to Health" radio show on WTPL 107.7 FM since 2008, championing chiropractic awareness and education in her community for over two decades.
Dr. Brooke Mills, a 2023 Sherman College graduate, continues her mother's legacy as a devoted and influential chiropractor. At Sherman, Dr. Mills was honored as a graduation class speaker and received prestigious accolades, including the BJ Palmer Philosophy Award and the Service Distinction Award.
Since January 2020, Dr. Mills has been deeply involved with the Foundation of Vertebral Subluxation, initially serving as a research fellow, event coordinator, and student liaison before assuming the role of executive director. Additionally, she made history as Miss New Hampshire 2023, becoming the first chiropractor to grace the Miss America stage in January of the same year.
Passionate about education and advocacy, Dr. Mills co-hosts the "Half Hour to Health" podcast with her mother, Dr. Ryan, and recently embarked on a new chapter by opening her first office alongside her fiance, Dr. John Schuessler, with whom she graduated from Sherman College.
Dr. Mill's advocacy extends beyond chiropractic care; she is dedicated to serving the brain injury community, drawing from her own experience with a brain injury in 2014. Through her school program, "Choose Health," she promotes healthy lifestyle choices, while her practice focuses on providing subluxation-based chiropractic care to families. Her commitment to service and advocacy exemplifies her dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
Chiropractic Advocate of the Year Award: Leah Kent & Mici Fluegge
The Chiropractic Advocate of the Year Award is presented to a non-chiropractor who has contributed significantly and noteworthily to the advancement of Sherman College and the chiropractic profession.
Leah Kent & Mici Fluegge are the recipients of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Advocate of the Year Award.
Kent and Fluegge are an enterprising duo in the world of franchise ownership and business development. They excel as multi-unit proprietors and territory developers, specializing in thriving health and wellness franchises such as Massage Envy, The Joint Chiropractic, and Hammer & Nails, as featured on Shark Tank.
Beyond their successful ventures, they actively contribute to revitalizing Spartanburg's downtown, enriching the area's tenant and retail landscape to better serve the community. Notably, the couple has fostered employment opportunities for Sherman students, and they eagerly welcome Sherman adjusters to provide patient care at their local franchise, The Joint.
Kent, a South Carolina native, began her medical technology career at Tampa General Hospital in 1988. Specializing in hematology and immunology, she later transitioned to quality assurance and outreach coordination roles at hospitals in South Carolina. In 2005, she joined Roche Diagnostics, covering the Southeast region as a technical service representative. In 2011, she co-founded JOINT Chiropractic clinics with her husband, promoting integrated medicine.
Kent's passion lies in philanthropy. From 2020 to 2023, she served on the board of the Spartanburg Art Museum. Currently, she dedicates her time to working with animal rescues, fostering, healing, and transporting neglected and abused animals. She also contributes to the Boy Scouts of America Palmetto Council to mentor children through scout programs.
Born in Germany, Fluegge had a successful soccer career, earning the title of "All-Star" player for four consecutive seasons and winning a state soccer championship in 1985. Creator of the "Stretch-A-Minute" core exerciser and stretching device, he effortlessly maintains excellent fitness, resulting in being crowned the 1990 Mr. Northern Germany. Additionally, Fluegge's expertise in fitness traveled with him when he relocated to Clearwater, Florida, in 1993, and later to South Carolina, where he continued his fitness services through "Personally Trained," assisting clients in achieving optimal physical fitness and personal results.
Using his entrepreneurial skills, Fluegge ventured into real estate investment, acquiring and managing multiple income-producing properties in South Carolina and Georgia. Additionally, Fluegge earned the title of "Brand Ambassador" in 2012 and was awarded "Highest Membership Conversion Clinic" in 2012, 2017 and 2018. He was awarded the "Sales Excellence Award" for three of his Massage Envy businesses from 2009 to 2011.
Kent and Fluegge reside in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with their son and 12 fur kids, advocating for holistic health and family values.
Student Leader of the Year Award: Javier Cruz Ortiz, DC2B
The Student of the Year is awarded to an exceptional student leader who has participated in recruiting activities that have led to the enrollment of students at Sherman College.
Javier Antonio Cruz Ortiz is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Student Leader of the Year Award.
Ortiz is a dedicated 12th-quarter student at Sherman College, actively engaged in various leadership roles and extracurricular activities. Since his 5th quarter, he has demonstrated his commitment to the college community by serving as a student ambassador who actively promotes the college's values and programs.
Throughout his tenure, Ortiz has played integral roles in seven Showcase Sherman events, highlighting his versatility by serving as team lead and, most recently, as the host for the entire weekend. His involvement extends beyond event coordination, as he has contributed his insights and leadership to the Health Center Advisory Committee and the Curriculum Review Committee, ensuring the continual improvement of academic and clinical programs.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Ortiz is an active member of student clubs, including the MLS Cub, Christian Chiropractic Club, Thompson Club, and, most recently, the Atlas Orthogonal Club. His diverse involvement reflects his passion for exploring different facets of chiropractic care and enhancing his professional skills.
Originally from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Ortiz envisions giving back to his community by establishing a family-based practice upon his return in 2025. Javier is poised to make a meaningful impact in the chiropractic profession with his dedication to service, leadership, and academic excellence.
Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) Supporter of the Year Award: Liam Schubel, B.A., D.C., F.C.S.C.
The ROAR Supporter of the Year award is given to an exceptional ROAR member who has exceeded expectations to recruit students to Sherman College.
Liam Schubel, B.A., D.C., F.C.S.C., is the recipient of the 2024 Sherman College of Chiropractic Reach Out And Recruit (ROAR) Supporter of the Year Award.
Dr. Schubel, a renowned figure in the chiropractic profession, is recognized globally for his expertise and contributions. With a vast audience reached through radio, television, and social media platforms, he has shared his knowledge and insights with millions worldwide.
As the proprietor of the largest chain of chiropractic centers in Latin America, spanning 28 locations across three countries, Dr. Schubel has significantly impacted the accessibility and quality of chiropractic care in the region. His leadership extends beyond the realm of healthcare, as he has held influential positions in education and politics.
Dr. Schubel served as vice chairman of the Sherman College Board of Trustees for eight years, demonstrating his commitment to advancing chiropractic education. Additionally, he has played a pivotal role as president of the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations (IFCO), advocating for the profession on a global scale.
Active in local politics, Dr. Schubel is a county committee member representing his community proudly within the Monmouth County Republican Party in New Jersey.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Schubel finds fulfillment as a devoted father to his four children-Liam Jr, Max, Star, and Skye-all of whom have benefited from chiropractic care since birth. He shares a loving partnership with his wife, Mrs. Parinda Schubel.
