Sherman College earned first place in five categories of the 2021 Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) Communications Contest, with two additional entries awarded second place. The contest, sponsored by the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), encourages and rewards excellence in communication. First-place award winners for South Carolina have now moved up to the national contest for judging.

The college's first-place projects in the state included an admissions print piece exploring chiropractic career options (brochure - nonprofit, government or educational), a series of sports-focused ads (advertising - ad campaign), an admissions webpage developed for high school students (web and social media - web copy), the enewsletter Sherman Shares (writing - nonprofit, government or educational newsletter), and a speech written for Lyceum 2021 (speech).

Second-place entries included the college's enewsletter Sherman Shares (enewsletter - nonprofit, government or educational) and the Excel alumni magazine (editing for print/online publications - magazine).

Senior Director of Marketing and Communications Karen Brower Rhodes, M.B.A., led the production of these communications in 2021 as part of initiatives spearheaded by several departments, including Marketing and Communications, Admissions and Institutional Advancement.

Feedback submitted by the state judge cited the college's efforts to engage audiences, express empathy and inclusion, and share the appeal of the profession. "This piece deftly conveys both the energy and excitement of future career options," the judge commented regarding the Sherman College's winning entry in the brochure category. "It captures the spirit of the profession, and the alumni features make it easy for readers to imagine what their future will look like."

The judge also noted the appeal and inclusivity of the college's recruiting webpage for high school students. "I love that the page opens by illustrating that everyone comes to chiropractic via different paths," she said. "No one way is 'correct,' and at Sherman, no matter your goals or how you got here, there's a place for you to be supported. The inclusivity of the message shines through, and makes for a compelling web experience - one that makes me eager to keep scrolling. Great work!"

This is not Marketing and Communications' first time receiving honors from MWSC and NFPW. In 2021, the college had six first-place awards, two second-place awards, and one honorable mention in the state competition. Of the six entries that moved on to the national competition, all earned national honors. The Sherman College Brand Guide received first place in the nation in the manual/handbook category, while three entries earned second-place honors, one earned third place, and the final entry was recognized with an honorable mention. Additional projects have been recognized nationally throughout the years, with a print piece for prospective students also earning top honors in 2014.
