Spartanburg County Celebrates January 11th as Sherman College Day
On January 11, 2023, Sherman College celebrated its 50th anniversary of incorporation. The college held a small event where Councilman Jack Mabry made a proclamation on behalf of Spartanburg County to officially recognize January 11th as Sherman College of Chiropractic Day. The event also welcomed founder Dr. Thom Gelardi along with Dr. Betty Gelardi, faculty, staff, and students.
In remarks made by Sherman College founder, Dr. Thom Gelardi, he explained "a profession's mission should be fixed for all-time," when reflecting upon his vision to start a chiropractic school in Spartanburg that supported the principles on which chiropractic is based. Dr. Gelardi went on to share that "the practice of chiropractic evolves through the philosophy and science and is expressed through art and having a school that continued that tradition was paramount to the chiropractic profession."
Sherman College President Dr. Jack Bourla expressed that "today's ceremony is a testament to what vision followed by conviction can do. Fifty years ago, Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi had an idea - an idea to propagate the chiropractic profession into the future, while maintaining the tenets, philosophy and principles that make chiropractic a separate, unique, and distinct profession." Dr. Bourla went on to say "today, Sherman College of Chiropractic stands proudly in receiving this proclamation and vows to assure that its students are educated and prepared to become doctors of chiropractic who focus on the analysis and correction of the vertebral subluxation."
After learning about some of the challenges faced in the early days of the college, Councilman Mabry voiced "I was so impressed to learn that when Sherman College essentially began with nothing 50 years ago and the number of students that have come through the doors is nothing short of amazing." He went on to address students at the event saying, "Spartanburg County welcomes you here and thanks you for choosing Sherman College and Spartanburg for your education."
